“If you’ve never experienced the thrill of KC Sprints, you’re in for a treat,” said Andy Fry, volunteer at the Topeka Community Cycle Project (TCCP).
“Two people climb onto stationary bikes and race to near exhaustion in less than a minute. It’s great fun to race, but even more fun to watch.”
Featured bands include OILS (guitar dynamism, Lawrence), The Slow Fade (art rock, Topeka), and The Hemmorhoids (punk rock, Lawrence). Music and KC Sprints races will be happening throughout the night, and the evening will close with a dance party from Topeka’s own “Resistance” DJs, Blaundie and DJ Whitebread.
“The Hemmorhoids were the icing on the cake last year,” said Troy Walker, TCCP volunteer.
“They played right in front of the crowd and carried their drums through the audience. We’re excited to have them back. We have no idea what they’ll do.”
Guests at the event will have the chance to win a vintage Schwinn cruiser, and bid on silent auction items comprised of a variety of local products and services.
Advance tickets are available online. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the event for a $5 suggested donation.
The Kansan Grill is located at 705 S. Kansas Avenue and will be donating a portion of sales to TCCP. The Grill will be serving food until 10pm, and serving drinks for the duration of the event.
TCCP is a not-for-profit community bicycle workshop. Donations at the event will support the group’s mission of promoting self-reliance, sustainability, and healthful living in Topeka, and furthering its commitment to the recycling, repurposing, and distribution of bicycles.
The volunteer-run shop is support by donations of time, tools, bicycles, and money. Flat Tire is the Cycle Project’s annual fund-raiser and bike party. TCCP, located at 423 S. Kansas Ave, serves as a learning facility and workspace where people can use the provided stands and tools to repair their bicycles, to learn about bicycle repair, and to learn about cycling. Volunteers dedicate their time and talents to helping people of all walks of life enjoy bicycle ownership and maintenance, whether for a sole means of transportation, for recreation, or anything in between. Since opening its doors in 2009, more than 300 people have claimed bicycles from the Cycle Project’s stock.
Anyone is welcome to donate bicycles or related parts, or volunteer during open shop hours, Thursdays 5-7pm, and Saturdays 10am-1pm.
